    Jan Adriaenssens

Jan Adriaenssens is the director of City of Things at imec. It’s a project that aims to bring the intuitive Internet of Things to the city, improving the quality of living for its citizens. In the City of Things, citizens are put center-stage during the entire innovation process, from idea development to the validation of the final product. It’s an ideal position for Adriaenssens, who is fascinated by the role that technology plays in our society and by the impact it has on our lives.

Adriaenssens studied mathematics in Antwerp and philosophy in London. After gaining policy experience as a senior researcher at the Flemish Council for Science and Innovation, he moved to the office of the Flemish Minister for Innovation, initially as adviser and later as deputy chief of staff. After this, he worked at the iMinds research center (which merged with imec in October 2016): first as Strategy & Innovation director and later as vice president Policy & Society.

At and& Leuven, Adriaenssens will be describing how City of Things aims to provide cities with a unique infrastructure to develop and test innovative solutions to tackle its urban challenges. His talk will offer a fascinating window into what’s involved in creating a truly smart city – from a technological, logistical and legal point of view.
