    Fionn Ferreira

Most of us are concerned with the increasing amount of plastic in the oceans and washing up on the coast. Few of us will ever make such a big contribution to removing it as Fionn Ferreira.

Ferreira spent much of his childhood paddling around the coasts of Ireland in his kayak. Disgusted by the amount of plastic he saw on the beaches, he organized beach cleaning operations, and built a machine to quantify and collect plastic pollution.

When he heard about microplastics, he was horrified, and decided to develop a method to remove microplastics from water. After many failed attempts he made a device which uses a magnet-based method to remove the particles from water with surprisingly high extraction rates, as well as being fast, non-harmful and clean.

His invention left top scientists in awe at several science fairs. He was named the Grand Prize Global Winner of the Google Science Fair 2019. Ferreira founded Fionn & Co. LLC and is currently working with Stress Engineering to fine-tune, build and test his design.

Ferreira has spoken at the World Economic Forum 2020, European Commission research conference, Global Plastic Health Summit, Smithsonian’s Earth Optimism Summit 2020, The Martin Luther King Lectures, and The Australian National Maritime Museum. He’s been featured in Forbes, Business insider, Bloomberg and CNN. He was awarded a 2019 Straubel Leadership Award and was named a World Economic Forum Plastic Action Champion.

and& is delighted that Ferreira has found space in his hectic schedule to speak in Leuven and to share his passion for cleaning up the environment by removing microplastics from water.
