    Antonio Bicchi

Antonio Bicchi is one of the world’s premier scientists involved in robotics and intelligent machines. After receiving a Ph.D. from the University of Bologna, he spent a few years at the MIT AI Lab of Cambridge before taking the first professorship in Robotics at the University of Pisa. In 2009 he founded and directs the Soft Robotics Laboratory at the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa. Since 2013 he is Adjunct Professor at Arizona State University.

Bicchi has coordinated many major international projects. His work between 2012 and 2017 led to the design of a new generation of robotic and prosthetic hands, and contributed to establishing the new field of soft manipulation. The robotic Soft Hand can grasp things by adapting its closure to the shape of objects. Currently he’s aiming to produce the first completely integrated bionic limb system with direct spinal interfacing.

Bicchi launched pioneering initiatives like the WorldHaptics conference, the major conference on natural and artificial touch, and the IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters, today the largest Journal in the field. In 2018 he received the prestigious IEEE Saridis Leadership Award.
